9 Foodtech Innovators Selected by the Canadian Food Innovation Network

The Canadian Food Innovation Network (CFIN) has recently announced the selection of 9 groundbreaking foodtech innovators who are revolutionizing the way we think about food. These innovators have been chosen for their cutting-edge technologies and forward-thinking approaches to food sustainability.

Who are the Foodtech Innovators?

These 9 foodtech innovators represent a diverse range of companies and technologies that are shaping the future of the Canadian food industry. From plant-based alternatives to sustainable packaging solutions, each innovator brings a unique perspective to the table.

#1 BetterTable

BetterTable Solutions (British Columbia) is developing an AI-powered mobile application to help commercial kitchens cut food waste by 50% and achieve Net Zero goals. This technically novel tool leverages algorithms that map food costs and food sustainability data to automatically generate carbon footprint and financial metrics. The app provides low-friction, real-time, prescriptive recommendations for foodservice operators, enabling streamlined monitoring and data-driven decisions that deliver measurable business outcomes.

#2 BetterCart Analytics

BetterCart Analytics (Saskatchewan) provides sophisticated, data-driven insights and AI-enabled market intelligence for the grocery sector. Their platform leverages Canada's largest grocery price database to provide pricing, promotion, and assortment analytics to retailers and CPG companies. This allows small and mid-market food producers to make confident, data-driven decisions that ultimately enhance profitability and competitiveness.

#3 CO2Brew

CO2Brew (Alberta) offers a specialized, engineered carbon dioxide recovery system designed for the craft brewing industry. This cleantech solution captures high-purity from the fermentation process, purifying and storing it for reuse within the brewery. By enabling a self-sufficient supply of beverage-grade, the system significantly reduces a brewery's reliance on industrial supply and lowers its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

#4 Colibri Vanilla

Colibri Vanilla (Quebec) is innovating in ingredient production by scaling a proprietary, clean-label extraction process for natural vanilla. Their technology aims to replace imported synthetic vanillin with a shelf-stable, high-quality natural ingredient. This project advances biomanufacturing in Quebec and offers a premium, transparent solution for food and beverage manufacturers.

#5 Hinbor

Hinbor (British Columbia) is piloting an AI platform specifically designed to optimize marketing and delivery logistics for restaurants. By analyzing operational data, the platform helps improve customer retention and process efficiency. This optimization minimizes unnecessary delivery miles, helping restaurants reduce their carbon emissions without increasing labor.

#6 Localize Your Food

Localize Your Food (Alberta) consumers with the story behind their food through large-scale, verified labeling programs in retail and institutional settings. Their software manages thousands of local, regional, and national product listings, making provenance information transparent and accessible to shoppers. The platform helps retailers and food businesses highlight and promote local supply chains based on trustworthy, third-party verified data.

#7 Revo Biochem

Revo Biochem (Alberta) is developing a proprietary fermentation platform for the sustainable production of functional food compounds from Canadian-grown crops. Their current focus is on producing high-quality food-grade abscisic acid, a naturally occurring bioactive compound. This biomanufacturing innovation provides Canadian supply chain resilience for functional foods, nutraceuticals, and agricultural applications.

#8 ThisFish

ThisFish (British Columbia) is a global leader in digital traceability and computer vision solutions for the seafood industry. Their flagship product, TallyVision, uses automated, AI-enabled cameras to inspect and classify seafood (like tuna and salmon) during processing. This technology exponentially improves food inspection accuracy, automates manual tasks, and enhances supply chain transparency and compliance.

#9 U Technology Corporation

U Technology Corporation (Alberta) is advancing process efficiency in the food industry through innovative technological solutions. The specific funded project focuses on streamlining operations, though public details are limited to general process improvement and digital solutions. Their work contributes to making Canada's food sector more productive, cost-efficient, and digitally integrated.

How are They Impacting the Food Industry?

By introducing new ways of doing business, these innovators are making a significant impact on the food industry. They are applying technology to tackle the food sector's most persistent challenges, from market intelligence to novel ingredients, as well as reducing food waste and cutting carbon emissions. Their efforts not only drive efficiency and sustainability but also help create a more resilient and environmentally friendly food system.

Overall, the selection of these 9 foodtech innovators by the Canadian Food Innovation Network highlights the importance of innovation and collaboration in driving positive change in the food industry. Their work serves as a beacon of hope for a more sustainable and ethical future of food production and consumption.
